Unisieppari / Dream Catcher

Unisiepparit ovat alunperin Ojibwe-intiaanien käsityötä. Luonnonmateriaaleista tehty unisieppari ripustettiin roikkumaan lapsen kehdon ylle, jotta lapsi näkisi vain hyviä unia ja nukkuisi paremmin. Ojibwe-heimolta tapa levisi myös muille intiaaneille ja 1980-luvun loppupuolella  unisieppari 'esiteltiin' pow wow -tapahtumien myötä myös intiaanikulttuurien 'ulkopuolelle'. Nykyään se on jo tunnettu esine eri puolilla maailmaa ja myös suomalaiset ovat alkaneet omaksua ajatuksen unisiepparista sekä kauniina koristeena että Hyvän Unen Tuojana.

 Sain opin unisiepparien tekemiseen intiaanimieheltäni, joka on tehnyt niitä itse jo 80-luvulta saakka. Olen höystänyt tekemiäni unisieppareita omalla näkemykselläni ja persoonallani, mahdollisimman paljon esineen alkuperää kunnioittaen. Tekemäni unisiepparit eivät siis kanna muovia, eikä niiden verkko ole punottu nailonista, vaan materiaaleina käytän mahdollisimman luonnonmukaisia aineita, kuten pellavaa, puuvillaa, villaa, luuta, puuta, kiveä, nahkaa jne. Sulat ja höyhenet käytän niiden luonnollisissa väreissään. Ystävyyteni lasin ja sen värien kanssa saa minut käyttämään unisieppareissa lasihelmiä.

Moni haluaa ripustaa unisiepparinsa ikkunaan ja näin ollen lasi on mitä parhain materiaali auringon valon voimaa ajatellen. Useissa töissäni on myös metallia. Vierastin ensin hieman sen käyttöä, mutta tutustuttuani paremmin esim. intiaanien tanssiasuihin, olen oppinut, että mm. nuo pienet metalliputkilot, 'kilistimet', kuuluvat nykyään asiaan siinä missä lasihelmetkin. Oppia ikä kaikki - ja onhan minulla erityinen onni; asiantuntija aviomiehenä... Voitte olla varmoja, että palautetta tulee, mikäli 'pistelen liikaa omiani' :)

Unisieppari on oiva lahja kenelle tahansa, jolle haluaa antaa jotain kaunista ajatuksena ja esineenä. Voit hankkia sellaisen myös itsellesi ja ripustaa sen sänkysi yläpuolelle. Unisiepparin verkko nappaa pahat unet ja vain hyvät pääsevät verkon läpi nukkuvan ihmisen luo.

The dream catchers are originally handicrafts of Ojibwe Indians. The dream catchers were hung over the babies beds so the children would have only good dreams and sleep peacefully. From Ojibwe people this habit spread out to other Indian tribes and in the late 80's the dream catcher was introduced to the non-indian world with help of pow wows. Nowdays the dream catcher is known in different parts of the world and also Finnish people have started to 'catch' the thought of the dream chather in house decoration and as something that brings good dreams.

I got to learn how to make dream catchers from my Indian husband who has made them since the 1980's. I have added my own views and my personality to them, but trying to respect the origin of the dream catchers as much as possible. The dream catchers i make are then not carrying any plastic and the webs are not made of nylon, but i use natural materials like linen, cotton, wool, bone, wood, stone, leather etc. The feathers i use are in their natural colours. My friendship with glass and it's colours makes me use glass beads. Many people want to hang their dream catcher in the window, so glass is the best material when you think about the strength of the sun light. Many of my work also have metal in them. I was first hesitant to use it, but after exploring for ex. Indian dance outfits, i have learned that those little metal cones do nowdays belong to the Indian crafts as well as glass beads. All ages are for learning (like we say in Finland) - and don't i have a special fortune; an expert as a husband... You can be certain i get feedback if i start telling tall tales :)

As a present or as a thought, a dream catcher is a good gift for anyone you want to give something nice to. You can also get one for yourself and hang it over your bed. The web of the dream catcher catches the bad dreams and only the good ones get through to the sleeping person.
