Indians and Spiritual matters.
after many months of thought,it is time that i write a few things about Indian people and Spiritual and being Indian...
it does not matter at all where i am in this world,i am still an Indian...i do not have to dress in clothing from the 1700's or 1800's to ''be'' Indian, and while it would be nice for me to have traditional clothing from my area from those times,i simply do not have the money...it costs many thousands of dollars to put together authentic clothing...we do not refer to our clothing as costumes either, those are things you wear to a party...think of our traditional clothings in terms of the Finnish National clothing..
i do not ''play'' Indian.
We meet very wonderful and interesting people when we are places and many times i am asked about Indian ''religon'' or Spirituality...i dont talk about these things openly with most people and when i have talked about them, they are with people i have gotten to know and feel comfortable talking with, and with people who show genuine respect for my Peoples beliefs.
i do not have workshops or classes about Indian Ceremonies or Spirituality, and i never will...Most Indian People believe that Spirtuality and Ceremonies are not things to be sold and we believe that selling them is wrong. Yes,there are some Indians who do sell workshops or ask for ''donations'' for attending their classes but what they do is a reflection on them..and there are others who claim to be Indian who do sell what they say is an Indian Ceremony or Teaching, when in fact,it is not...
i can only speak for myself and what i know is right...that does not mean i am not a Spiritual person,it simply means i dont sell my Spirituality.
i will say this about Indian Spirituality...We have many many Different Tribes in the United States, and there is no ''one'' Spiritual belief among all the Trbes...each tribe had and has their own Ceremonies and Teachings...some are similar to what other Tribes practice...not all Indian People Sundance, not all Indian people have Pipe Ceremonies or go to Sweat Lodge...it is the same as the people of Europe do not all believe the same thing or have the same church they go to...
Indian people where i am from, are very very different than the Indian People of the Plains, the people most are familiar with from movies and tv...and the Plains Tribes are very different than the Peoples of the NorthWest Coastal areas...different languages, cultures, clothing and Spirituality/Ceremonies...What the Hopi People believe and practice is very different than what Lakota People believe and practice and what Mohawk People believe and practice is different than the Lakota ways...NO real Indian Spiritual Person mixes Beliefs or Ceremonies from different Tribes...
there have been some Ceremonies in the past that have been open to people from outside the Tribe, but they are less and less now because of disrespectful actions of those allowed to attend from the outside world...some people have learned different Teachings from a Tribe, and then gone out into the world and sold what they have been taught for money and fame and it is very dis-respectful and betraying Trust to do this...We have always been an open people and shared, but because of the abuses that have happened,we now have to be much more careful and not share...sadly,there are a number of people who have come to Europe selling''Indian ceremonies or Teachings'',and yes some are Indian and many are not but claim to be...
I do not blame people in Europe for wanting to learn and exchange knowledge with other Cultures,i think that is an important part of being alive in this world...but i do feel badly for people who pay their hard earned money and are taught something that is not real by some one who is not real...We have many people talk with us about these workshops and ceremonies and people are beginning to see that what is being sold to them,is not real or the people selling it are not real....
Indian People from North America,do NOT use the word ''Shaman''...we use the words'' Medicine Person'',''Healer'',or a word in one of our own languages that describes the person...most of the real Medicine People stay in their own communities, there is enough help needed there without having to travel around the world giving classes and workshops...they do not have websites advertising and promoting themselves, business cards that list their healing abilities...and they do not write books teaching how to do this Ceremony or become a ''Shaman''...
and not every Indian Person is a Medicine person or healer!
I am only speaking about Indian people,no other Teachings,Spiritualities,or Religons from other Peoples in the world, and i do not mean at all to offend anyone from a different culture or Spirituality...
I am an Artist and hand-crafter...i do make items that have and are used in Ceremonies by both Indian and non-Indian Peoples, and i am honored by that...i also make other things that are not used in a Spiritual way...i do not sell anything i make as ''Blessed'' or claim it has magic or mystical powers...
My Wife is Finnish and she has her own Beliefs and Spirituality and that is her right to discuss them or not to as she chooses...
i will say in closing once again, just because i do not sell my Spirituality, does not mean i am not a Spiritual Person...
